About Explorers

The Greenbank Explorers Scouts Unit (Braid District) meets at Greenbank Church and is from 14 to 18 years old.

Try more. See more. Do more. At Explorers you'll get the chance to dream big, find your place in the world and make memories to last a lifetime.

There are over 70 Explorers from the Braid District meeting weekly.

Activities

Being an Explorer is all about discovering the world on your own terms and making the most of what you have, wherever and whoever you are.

Alongside your new friends, you’ll master the skills that will make you feel stronger and happier in the long run, and try things you’d never get the chance to do at home or at school.

Whether you’re hiking to faraway lands or building a robot in your local town hall, you’ll have the freedom to choose what you’d like to do, and work together with adults to make it happen.

Challenge Awards are all about stepping outside your comfort zone. Try out something you wouldn't normally be interested in. Take the lead on something that scares you. Along the way, you'll unlock hidden talents and stand tall.

Participation rather than meeting set standards is the key approach and for the Explorer who wants to be recognised for his or her achievements there are a number of Challenge Awards and Activity Badges.

There are a range of badges and challenge awards that Explorer Scouts can gain to recognise their achievements.

Uniform:

All our Explorers wear a uniform. There is no need to wear uniform for the first short period until the young person decides to stay. New uniforms are sold on the Scout Store at: Scout Store.
It’s wise to name uniforms (and indeed other clothing)! There is an active second-hand market for uniforms if you don’t want to buy new.

Camps, Trips and Events

As well as providing a great programme focussing on fun activities, badges, and adventure, all the sections run special activities and camps.

Explorers have the option of a number of international and UK trips away, camps and hikes per year. Also partake in activities that contribute to your Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Camps and events are optional but are lots of fun. They will typically incur their own fee which is subsidised by our fundraising. But it’s really important to us that no young person is left out because of financial issues. If you would like to ask about part or full funding for any activity or camp, please feel free to have a quiet word with any leader. The leaders will advise with plenty notice, the dates of upcoming events or activities which require sign up and/or payment. Please get in touch if you have any questions.

Subscriptions

Our fundraising efforts mean we can keep subscription costs low. The subscriptions more or less cover our fees to the Scout Association. Subscriptions amount annually to £87 for each Explorer.

They are paid in three instalments, in October, January and April. We are a registered charity and can reclaim Gift Aid on the subscriptions, so we ask families to sign a Gift Aid declaration if they pay tax.

Explorers as Young Leaders

If taking the lead sounds like something you’d like to try for yourself, sign up for the Explorer Scout Young Leader’s Scheme to get some hands-on experience volunteering with the younger Scout sections. This can count as service activities for Duke of Edinburgh and King Scouts Awards.
