The Scouts is the third section of the 4th Braid Scout Group.
Scouts follow on from Cubs, and Scouts may move onto the Greenbank Explorer Scout Unit at the age of 14. They meet for two hours per week. Scouts are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities as part of their programme.
Scouts take part in a balanced programme that helps them to find out about the world in which they live, encourages them to know their own abilities and the importance of keeping fit and helps develop their creative talents. It also provides opportunities to explore their own values and personal attitudes.
Scouts work towards their Chief Scout’s Gold Award, the highest award a Scout can achieve.
Challenge Awards are all about stepping outside your comfort zone. Try out something you wouldn't normally be interested in. Take the lead on something that scares you. Along the way, you'll unlock hidden talents and stand tall.
There are 9 Challenge Award badges for Scouts and these are awarded based on effort and achievement. “Participation” rather than meeting set standards is the key approach and for the Scout who wants to be recognised for his or her achievements there are a number of Challenge Awards and Activity Badges.
There are a range of badges and challenge awards that Scouts can gain to recognise their achievements.

There is no need to wear uniform for the first short period until the young person decides to
stay. New uniforms are sold on the Scout Store at: Scout Store.
It’s wise to name uniforms (and indeed other clothing)!
There is an active second-hand market for uniforms if you don’t want to buy new.
As well as providing a great programme focussing on fun activities, badges, and adventure, all the sections run special activities and camps.
Scouts have the option of a number of camps and hikes per year.Camps and events are optional but are lots of fun. They will typically incur their own fee which is subsidised by our fundraising. But it’s really important to us that no young person is left out because of financial issues. If you would like to ask about part or full funding for any activity or camp, please feel free to have a quiet word with any leader. The leaders will advise with plenty notice, the dates of upcoming events or activities which require sign up and/or payment. Please get in touch if you have any questions.
Our fundraising efforts mean we can keep subscription costs low. The subscriptions more or less cover our fees to the Scout Association. Subscriptions amount annually to £81 for each member of the Group and £87 for each Explorer.
They are paid in three instalments, in October, January and April. We are a registered charity and can reclaim Gift Aid on the subscriptions, so we ask families to sign a Gift Aid declaration if they pay tax.
