Scouting at Greenbank involves about 180 young people and is split into 4 sections each run by a team of volunteers. They meet in Greenbank Church halls, Braidburn Terrace, Edinburgh EH10 6ES. The 4th Braid Scout Group comprises Beavers (6-8 years old), Cubs (8-10½) and Scouts (10½-14). The Explorers (14-18) take young people from the 4th and other local Scout Groups.

There are currently waiting lists to join Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. The Scout waiting list is full.

The waiting lists open a year before the young person is old enough to join the appropriate section.

We have Beavers, Cubs and Scouts sections, and also host the district Explorer Scouts. All run with experienced volunteers who are here to help the group members with a diverse program filled with activities to suit all abilities. There is something for everyone!

Our Values

The Scout Association aims to provide young people with exciting activities, conducted safely. That is not a guarantee that nobody will be injured, but activities are carefully risk assessed and supervised to reduce the chance of harm. More widely, Scouting is about gaining skills for life – teamwork, social skills, citizenship and leadership.

It is our duty in Scouting to always act with kindness, respect, and to keep the promise we make upon enrolment. While Greenbank Church is our meeting place, and we have very close connections over our long history, the Scouting movement is open to those of ALL faiths and none. The most important thing about being a member of the Group and Explorers is to have fun, being active and working with others.

For our young people of all ages, hanging out with friends (and making new friends) is an important part of what we do. Adults too can have fun, helping with activities or volunteering as leaders or at our amazing Jumble Sale!

Volunteering

Leaders

All our Leaders are volunteers. They are vetted by Disclosure Scotland, First Aid trained to at least First Response level, and trained by the Scout Association in how to provide a fun, safe, and adventurous programme. If you’re happy with front-facing volunteering, we would love to hear from you and please contact us about becoming a Helper or Leader.

Young Leaders

They are reinforced by Young Leaders (Explorers undergoing training in leadership and programme planning).

Helpers (Parents or Guardians)

If your child is part of 4th Braid group, please volunteer as a Helper. Our helpers are parents/guardian/family members vetted by Disclosure Scotland but with no training obligation. Helpers are typically asked on an occasional basis to assist the group for bigger events such as outdoors/hikes.

Other ways to volunteer:

We’re always keen for new help, and there are many ways to help out.

If you’d rather help in the background, we have a Trustee Board who meet a handful of times a year, and are always looking for new members. There is lots of admin involved in running a group of our size, so if that’s your skillset, please contact any section – we’d be very glad to hear from you! Volunteering can be done on a flexible basis. No volunteer would be expected to be present at everything. So please consider if any of these roles might be suitable for you. We’re a great team, and it’s lots of fun for adults too!
